Ever have a romance that burned really hot and burned out really fast? Here's a true story... "Burning Hot and Fast" --- Part I It was just supposed to be drinks. I told her to meet me at a champagne bar downtown. Now, I'm not much of a champagne drinker, but I knew the place wasn't that crowded and that it was sorta cozy. I guess you can say that even though I wasn't expecting anything, that I always always leave the door open for opportunity to come waltzing right in. That's why I suggested this place and not some drab sports bar near Times Square. I got there early and luckily got a small sofa with a table, sat down, and ordered a drink. No it wasn't a "date" but I kept wondering if it would be more than "just drinks." As I waited, I was sitting and staring at another party that was going on behind me. I kept wondering if she was in there somewhere or if she was just late. No matter though, because she spotted me, smiled, and sat down. I looked at her smile and her eyes and knew right then and there that it wasn't gonna be "just drinks." What more would it be exactly? I really wasn't sure, but I knew that I'd better pay attention. I don't remember a lot of our conversation that night, but I do remember that it was fun, and that it went by quickly. After a while, I suggested we hop somewhere else, and she decided to take me to one of her favorite Italian places to grab a really quick bite. It was a bit chilly, but walking with her was probably one of the best parts of the night, not only because she had on some really hot boots, but I could feel her flirty overtones and the tension between the quick glances and looks we exchanged. I had a strong urge to hold her hand, or at least let her grab my arm. Neither happened... yet... but I enjoyed our walk side-to-side from the champagne bar to the Italian joint where we ate and talked some more. And then it was off to a sake bar around St Mark's that I remembered was open late. I was beginning to think that the sake bar was a mistake. Mainly because someone really needed to clean the bathroom, which was somewhat close to where we were sitting near the bar, and wafts of reekdome would blow past us from time to time. It was kind of gross actually. But still, there she was, sitting there, chugging down sake and beer with me, laughing at my stupid stories and looking like she was interested. Was she really? I decided to call it a night and catch a cab so I could take her home. As we headed toward her place, I knew that I had to see her again. But before I knew it, and before I could figure anything out, we were there. It was time to part ways for tonight. I told her I had a good time, and decided to giver her a hug goodnight. That was the first time I had really touched her. Later on, she would tell me that her girlfriends asked her how the hug/chest was, her response being, "Mmmmm... nice." I know I don't have anything near a bowflex chest, so I guess that is a good sign of chemistry. Ha... Later that week or so, it turned out that she was going to be at this lounge where one of my girl friends was having her birthday party, that same night! Hmmm... I told her I'd love to see her there. The thing was, that girl friend of mine told me that she wanted to introduce me to her girlfriend. As in, "I really want you to meet my girlfriend, _____." So that night I met her, and she was cute, but honestly, I kept looking for her. The night wore on, and I drank, I danced, I chatted it up with some of my buddies... and I ran into a lot of familiar faces... maybe too many. Then she showed up. Her: "Hi..." I got her a drink and then I asked her to dance. And we did. It was nice. Not a bad dancer by any means. But I really wasn't paying attention to that. I was just glad that she was there. We took a break and I decided to check on my friends. As we were walking around... Me: "When did you get here?" We went uptown a little bit and decided to pop into another bar. To me it didn't matter where we were, as long as she followed me. We could've been wandering aimlessly along the city streets for all I cared. However, it was a little chilly. Me: "Hey..." Works every time.
